Promoting the use of Digital technologies and innovative data analytical methods to support the application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) in Barbados.


Project DigiFish is a 1-year project funded by the Barbados Environmental Conservation Trust (BECT).

Catching the digital wave of change

Objectives

  • To demonstrate how vessel tracking systems can be used to make informed decisions about how fisheries can be best managed to balance diverse societal objectives and improve livelihoods.
  • To pilot the installation of 30 Pelagic Data Systems (PDS) vessel tracking devices on small vessels in Barbados
  • To use data classification algorithms to illustrate how fishing effort changes through space and time.
  • To foster productive partnerships between BARNUFO, Fisheries Division and the Coastal Zone Management Unit in applying integrated data solutions to support Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and fisheries management.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved digital literacy of fisherfolk and fisheries management officials in Barbados to support fisheries management.
  • Improved collaboration among coastal and marine stakeholders in the practical application of EAF.
  • Robust database of location data and analytical tools to support MSP and inform decision-making by fisherfolk and fisheries management officials.
